    2. This isn't really a four-star book. Even for a pulp, it's very short. The drama is hammy, the romance is underdeveloped, & the occult rituals aren't original compared to others of this sub-genre. And yet it's a keeper.Okay, sure. This book will never win awards for anything -- it's the goffick equivalent of Space Mutiny. But it's the first pulp-gothic I ever read; that alone gives sentimental value.     3. This gothic hits all the right notes (young woman, creepy old house, reincarnation, witchcraft, Satanism) but it hits them so very slowly. The climax is pretty solid, and I tacked on an extra star for that.

    4. Miriam Lynch is usually a good writer, and that was the case with this book, but the subject wasn't a favorite. I like stories about the Salem witch trials, but I don't tend to like ones about devil worship, so it didn't really do it for me.I thought there was too much focus on the character's beliefs and not enough on the characters themselves.
